He Stole Their Clothes... Why?
We have all heard the story of Krishna hiding the clothes of the gopis as they bathed in Yamuna. But, who can think of the real reason of maybe why he did so? Why would the all supreme lord take pleasure in hiding clothes?
There can be 3 explanations for this.
- The gopikas, were disrespecting the Goddess Yamuna(who is one of the most holy rivers) as they bathed in her without clothes on. So, in order to teach them a lesson and make them understand, Krishna hid their clothes as they bathed and only returned it to them after they acknowledged their mistake and apologised to Yamuna Devi.
- Another one being that to free oneself from human and worldly pleasures, that according to Hinduism are - hatred, shame, lineage, pride, fear, secretiveness, caste and grief. The gopikas were free of 7 of these pleasures except for shame and Krishna eluded this by asking them to let free of their bodies and devote themselves to the lord supreme.
- The last one is a story. The unmarried women of Gokula prayed to Goddess Katyayani (the form of Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasur) in order to be blessed with worthy husbands like she was with Lord Shiva. The gopis too followed this tradition, but instead of worshipping her for a worthy and loving husband, they prayed to her to have Krishna, the son of Nanda as their husband, who at that time was only 7! So, in order to fulfil their desires, Krishna saw each of them naked as only a husband could see his wife naked.
And of course, Krishna was a mischievous young kid who loved playing pranks on everyone!
