The Secret Behind His Sleep

Though there are various myths behind his sleep, this one caught my eye. So, I have given about it in detail.

Kumbhakarna had done a yajna to please Brahma so that he could obtain Indrasena(Indra's army). At the end of the yajna, Brahma emerged in front of Kumbhakarna. Jealous of his success, Indra requested Saraswati to hold Kumbhakarna's tongue when he was asking his boon. Due to this when Kumbhakarna wanted to pronounce Indrasena he instead pronounced Nidrasena(Bed of sleep). 

Immediately after he spoke, Raavan realized what he had asked and when asked to retrieve the boon, Brahma denied and instead reduced it to half - he would sleep half a year and would eat the rest half.

Even for fighting the war against Ram, Kumbhakarna woke up only when a thousand elephants walked on him.
